General Services Administration
Department of Transportation Headquarters
The DOT headquarters, the first executive cabinet-level office building constructed following 9/11, consolidated 5,500 employees in one location. Utilizing a design-build and leaseback financing arrangement, the architecture commission was based on GSA design excellence criteria. Spanning 2 city blocks, the design for a 2 million SF complex creates two separate buildings that complement each other with respect to their size, shape and architectural character. Floor plans and fenestration were designed to ensure that all employees had access to natural light. Soaring atriums, topped by glass skylights, bring natural light to more users of the large buildings.
