The site presented a series of interesting contextual constraints, such as adjacent proximity to one of the largest freeways in Charlotte, as well as being located right next to the historic ADM milling silos that tower over the surrounding neighborhood. We were able to translate these unfavorable constraints and utilize them as positive opportunities for our site. We viewed the milling silos as a blank canvas – an opportunity to repurpose them not in the manner of a new programmatic use, but as a backdrop for spectacular transformative projection mapping at a large scale.
There was also strong desire for an iconic branding moment at the top of the building, and we felt the iconic expression could be imagined as a moment for “art in the sky.” If we create an icon integral with the building and not just an attachment, it becomes an experience. People fully engage with the attraction. We see an opportunity to become one of the most coveted spots in the City of Charlotte, not only benefiting the sponsor, but also the cache and desirability of the building.
Our collaborative efforts were to enliven and expand the reaches of downtown Charlotte and the North Tryon district. The North Tryon Vision Plan shared with us describes the district as an “intricate urban mosaic,” with the potential to be “bold and contemporary while fostering authenticity and equity in all respects.” We truly embrace these ideals and consider them fully synergistic with this endeavor.
Tower Orientation
Residential program is oriented towards center city and future North Tryon Community views, while the amenities podium also allows for views to nearby proposed silo projections.
Celebrating Silo Forms
Residential massing is broken up into a series of “tubes” as a celebratory abstraction of the nearby silo building forms.
Integrated Signage & Amenity Spine
The tower form is orchestrated around an internal signage/amenity spine, which showcases state-of-the art amenities and art-inspired signage opportunities distinguishable by a unique facade treatment.
