It was challenging to adapt an existing building along the noisy Interstate 40 – originally a motor vehicle garage and then an office – into a spiritual environment for All Souls Church. To meet the needs of the church, which has an affinity for the ancient despite its contemporary operation, the design team conceptualized the interiors as a minimalist backdrop. The design allows the church to host liturgical installations and mount changing artistic displays, while providing solace in the city. With the adaptive reuse, congregants can comfortably enjoy the space for worship, gatherings, teaching, and finding inspiration.
The multi-purpose sanctuary includes flexible seating, mobile display panels, a backlit cross, and a custom-designed movable Eucharist table. The Mary Tarwater Chapel within All Souls is a space for prayer, meditation, and study, and is available to nursing mothers. Variations in ceiling heights and lighting create a defined space for spiritual intercession.
