A new home for the sport
Located in a former historic armory on Drexel University’s campus, the 77,000-square-foot Arlen Specter US Squash Center brings together competition, training, events, and support spaces for U.S. Squash and Team USA. Developed through a collaborative process involving Drexel University, U.S. Squash, private donors, designers, engineers, contractors, and owners, the project transformed the existing building into a destination for players and spectators.
Designed around the action
The facility includes 16 singles courts, two doubles courts, two glass exhibition courts, offices, and support spaces for training and tournaments. A mezzanine overlooking the courts, overhead screens, and adjacent event and lounge areas allow audiences to follow several matches at once, while live-streaming capabilities extend the experience to viewers around the world.
Preserving history, supporting performance
The design addressed material performance, lighting, solar control, color, and product selection to support top-tier play within the historic armory. All work was documented to meet historic tax-credit requirements, and the architectural team also created multiple fundraising packages in support of the project’s capital campaign.
