Building out a multi-phased plan
The design team collaborated with Bay Area Community Church to prepare a multi-phase master plan for a new church campus that would meet its growing, cross-generational congregation in innovative ways. The idea of a wave and water theme for the architecture and interiors, which seemed appropriate for the context of Chesapeake Bay, was inspired by two references from scripture: Habakkuk 2:14 describes the “knowledge of the glory of the Lord” filling the earth as the “waters cover the sea;” and in Revelations 4:6 and 15:2, the Apostle John illustrates the throne room of heaven and the people of God depicted on a “sea of glass.”

The first building phase included a multipurpose gymnasium/worship auditorium, a cafe and coffee bar, administrative spaces, children’s and adult classrooms, and a dedicated youth worship space called “The Warehouse.” The second building phase included a 350-seat chapel and an expanded children’s wing with new classrooms, and a playroom sized for families.
