A multifunctional building for the worship community

Carlisle United Methodist Church, which combined three previously shrinking congregations, offers robust community outreach through the facilities and programs it offers. The theme of “open hearts and open minds” is reflected in the arrangement of the plan as “open arms” – two wings around a central entrance. The multifunctional building includes a 600-seat worship space, community rooms, a full-size gymnasium, areas for childcare and boy and girl scouts, and extensive fellowship spaces. The design balances traditional and contemporary characters to appeal to a wide range of ages.

The building engages the site through a lobby with large glass curtain walls. front and back. A formal garden with benches, shaded landscaping and a fountain grace the front entrance. Curtain walls at the back of the lobby provide views toward an amphitheater and structured gathering area on one side, and a more informal landscaped area on the other side. All views from the building are framed to look at a grove of existing mature trees to create a feeling of solace.
