Two schools within one “campus” building
The DREAM Highbridge Campus – encompassing an elementary school and a middle school in contiguous space – occupies the first two levels and a portion of the cellar of a long, narrow, 17-story residential building on River Avenue in the Bronx opposite the No. 4 elevated subway line. The community-minded public charter school accommodates 800 students in Grades PreK-8. Like other DREAM Charter Schools, this campus offers its scholars free after school and summer programming, and accommodates active community-based programs.
Compact planning on a tight urban site
The First Floor contains shared spaces such as conference rooms and student dining as well as specialized classrooms for music, dance, art, and science. The double-height volume of the gymnasium extends from the cellar through the First Floor, allowing abundant natural light into the space and visibility from interior corridors. An outdoor sports and play area on the roof of the First Floor runs most of the length of the building and is accessed from the general classroom level.
Lively interiors reinforce DREAM’s goal for its students to “play, learn, and grow”
