Flexible teaching and learning spaces

Elon University’s 2016 Master Plan expands the campus to include a new innovation quad. The first project, a collaboration with Ayers Saint Gross, is designed as two wings: Founders Hall and Innovation Hall. The combined facility serves as an academic destination for the Engineering Program and the Department of Physics. The project supports the expansion of key programs and provides flexible teaching and learning spaces designed to support the university for years to come.

Supporting bold ideas

Innovation Hall houses laboratory spaces for core engineering courses, bioinstrumentation, and environmental engineering research, as well as faculty offices and a variety of flexible classrooms for biophysics and physics. Founders Hall is designed to inspire engineering students and faculty to transform bold ideas into prototypes. The two-story building includes a main assembly hall that provides gathering and collaboration areas for students, where a grand stair serves as both a social area for students and flexible lecture seating.

The context of both innovation and campus character

Double-height assembly and maker spaces showcase the creativity and ingenuity of Elon’s students. The interior is designed to reflect the rigor and tectonics of innovation through raw materials such as painted steel and exposed concrete, accented by warm-colored wood in the floor and ceiling. Externally, the design is intended to blend into the predominantly Neo-Georgian architectural style of Elon’s campus. Founders Hall has a more transitional style in reference to the innovation happening inside but harmonizes with its surroundings to form a cohesive and inspiring architectural ensemble.
