Blending classic mid-century modern with Southern California beach culture
The challenge was to transform a 1960s modernist structure on Los Angeles’ Westside—the former Custom Hotel into a full-service boutique lifestyle hotel, while honoring and preserving the work of legendary LA architect Welton Beckett. Our work encompassed the complete renovation of guestrooms and apartment-style suites, lobby, fitness center, a new lounge, restaurant and bar, as well as a new porte-cochere and redesigned entry drive.

A balance of conservancy and creativity, the design blends clean lines with light and warm natural woods, native fabrics, lush foliage, handmade tiles, and custom furnishings. Artwork and murals by local and national artists set an inspired tone. Bursts of green on the glazed terracotta tiles and quartzite stone at the bar add another layer of vibrance to the lobby, which is wrapped in New York artist Alex Proba’s abstract mural and full-height oak shutters.
A boutique retreat inspired by California’s free spirit
Airy and cozy, the hotel’s spacious, modern rooms and suites boast sweeping city and coastal views. Oversized windows and a patterned façade give way to playful color blocking that adds depth and dimension to rooms and corridors.
