John F. Kennedy High School was an existing facility around which the design team planned a specialized high school to house multiple facilities and functions for Winston-Salem / Forsyth County Schools, with the goal of maximizing the large school site. In the first phase of this master plan, the original Kennedy High School remained occupied while three new components – the Career Center, Career and Technical Education High School, and Carter EC High School – were under construction. The site was fully built out in subsequent years, including new parking areas and renovation of a shared dining hall and culinary kitchen.
The extensive renovation of the original John F. Kennedy High School marked the final phase of a decade-long initiative to develop this specialized high school site for the county. The three newer schools on site were occupied during renovation of the original building. The renovation upgraded building systems, transformed the main entrance, and provided outdoor program space. As Career and Technical Education had become a hallmark of the curriculum, the school’s floor plans and infrastructure were re-imagined to more intuitively support that type of instruction.
