The Stieff Silver Manufacturing Company Building is a classic early-twentieth century brick industrial building

Johns Hopkins University acquired the former Stieff Silver Manufacturing Company Building, a classic early 20th-century industrial structure, for the distance learning program of the Whiting School of Engineering. The University’s vision for this unique space was to create a state-of-the-art showcase to welcome staff and visitors to the department. The design team planned and designed the renovation of the First Floor and Mezzanine to accommodate a reception area. new television recording studios for creating distance learning content, teaching and collaboration spaces, and administrative offices.

The design team preserved the historic industrial character of the building with its wide plank white oak floors, heavy timber beams, exposed steel columns, and tall windows, and updated it with modern touches. The reception area features a wood plank and frameless glass signage wall with a built-in brick planter. A new steel frame and open tread stair connects the two levels, while allowing views through. Given the extent of hard surfaces, nose control became important and was addressed through acoustic panels integrated into light fixtures and intentionally placed soft flooring. The tall existing windows provide abundant direct sunlight into the space and were enhanced with shades that diffuse the harshest light and maximize views to the outdoors. Conference rooms and offices were fit out with glass walls to allow natural light to permeate deep into the space. Built-in brick planters with live plants provide a softer, biophilic complement to the industrial space.
