Expanding space, expanding services

University of Maryland’s Upper Chesapeake Health offers residents of northeastern Maryland exceptional patient experience and services. To support the growth of cancer care diagnostic and treatment services and increase the number of in-patient rooms, the design team created a three-story, 78,870-SF vertical bed tower expansion. The addition provides 21 new medical/surgical inpatient beds, 43 observation beds, and shell space for future needs.

The expansion relocated the Breast Center, Hematology-Oncology, and other multi-disciplinary departments to the new bed tower, allowing expanded patient services and supporting new medical equipment. A separate project renovated the emergency department. Our interiors team provided the design of the bed tower, including public areas, patient care units, and offices. Evidence-based design features throughout the project include ergonomically designed staff stations, improved acoustics, and intuitive wayfinding features.
