The new 42,000 SF Pre-K school for the City of Oak Ridge is U-shaped in plan, which maximizes the amount of daylight in the classrooms and corridors and creates a screened courtyard for outdoor play. The administrative wing, with offices and shared conference rooms, parallels the street and becomes the public face and main entrance to the facility. Two perpendicular classroom wings define the courtyard and contain 16 flexible, open classrooms, with provision to expand to 20. Each classroom has ample built-in storage, a kitchen for meal preparation and clean-up, and easy access to restrooms. The efficiency and convenience of the classrooms allows teachers to focus their attention on the students and their lessons.
