A casual weekend farm house

This weekend house – the third designed for an extended family on their country estate — replaced a white clapboard structure affectionately called the “cottage.” It sits at the top of a hill where it has commanding views of the valley’s farmland from all sides. Its large columnar front porch faces an adjacent dairy barn, which was previously converted to a residence for other family members.  The four second floor bedrooms occupy shed dormers each oriented to a different view of the property.

Spacious, light-filled interiors

The house is square in plan and organized around a central stair and chimney. The first-floor spaces — living room, dining room, kitchen and sitting room – occupy a loft-like space with tall ceilings, divided only by built-in cabinetry.   A small library, accessed by a secret stair from the master bedroom, is located in a cupola with circular windows that offer views in each direction.
