PS/IS 42 Queens

PS/IS was the first of several schools we designed for the New York City School Construction Authority. Designed to last more than a century, these buildings define the social and physical character of the city’s neighborhoods. Here, we expanded an 800-student PK-8 school on the Rockaway Peninsula to increase its capacity by 400 students. The new entrance, student dining complex and full-sized gymnasium are included in a classroom addition that is not only stylistically compatible with the existing historic building but also facilitates accessibility to the entire school complex.
