St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church is an archdiocesan facility that serves over 300 congregants for worship, religious education, and social events. Fronted by a gracious public plaza, the vaulted, double-height entry is articulated by decorative brickwork. Flanking the entry are two cupola-domed belltowers atop enclosed stairs. These steeples are punctuated by soaring arched windows that allow natural light into the interiors, filtered through ornate mashribaya metalwork. Above the nave and each of the three altars are domes accentuated with clerestory windows that provide another opportunity to light the church from above.
Throughout the project, the Michael Graves design team collaborated with the church board and subject matter experts in Egypt on both the programmatic organization of the building and the integration of traditional Coptic Orthodox forms and geometries into the architecture and interiors.
