A South Street landmark
The Theater of Living Arts has been part of Philadelphia’s South Street neighborhood since its rebirth in 1963. The approximately 1,000-person venue sits within a pedestrian-oriented streetscape of storefronts and has long been known for its distinct black box atmosphere. Live Nation purchased the property in 2006 and undertook renovations to improve sightlines, replace seating, and upgrade sound and lighting systems.
Making room for more
The renovation included accessibility improvements, structural design for new balcony seating and an expanded bar. A life safety study and patron experience plans explored alternative approaches to increasing venue capacity and revenue. A new standing area above the fixed seating added capacity while upgraded mezzanine framing improved accessibility.
Keeping the character intact
New finishes warm the space while preserving the dark, intimate environment that defines the TLA experience. The result supports a more accessible and flexible venue without losing the atmosphere that has made it a South Street destination.
