Combination elementary and middle school

This eight-story Zeta Charter School occupies a rectangular site between West 218th and West 219th Streets along 9th Avenue in the Inwood section of Manhattan. The primary building entrance is located on West 219th Street, closest to a city subway stop. The facility includes an elementary school for 654 students, and a double middle school accommodating 564.

The plan is configured as an “L” to maximize available light and air for the general and specialized classrooms. Common spaces include a kitchen and dining complex, “gymatorium,” exercise room, and administrative and support functions. Extensive, meticulous coordination was required to achieve the varied acoustic requirements of specialized program spaces, including a band and orchestra room, interactive labs, and the gymatorium.
