Interlocking the addition with the existing building
The expansion of the existing PreK-5 elementary school along Union Street in the Flushing section of Queens accommodates an adjusted capacity of 692 students. The program provides additional PreK and other classrooms, along with science and technology laboratories, specialized instruction rooms for art, music, dance, and other programs, and a new cafeteria.

The L-shaped addition was designed to be four stories tall to reduce the footprint of the building. In plan, it interlocks with the existing C-shaped building to create a central courtyard along Union Street, which expands pick-up and drop-off areas and makes them safer. The configuration also maximizes the building perimeter and thus introduces more natural light into the interiors. Classrooms and common spaces serving science, art, music and dance overlook the courtyard.
