S Street Village is a mixed-use project that includes affordable housing, the New Community Church, and the headquarters for Manna, Washington’s leading non-profit affordable housing developer and counselor. The project is an example of our commitment to affordable housing and mixed-use development as part of community revitalization in DC, realized in this case through upzoning, as well as planning and design expertise.

The birth of New Community Church is documented in the book “S Street Rising,” which follows the destruction of the Shaw community by the crack cocaine epidemic and the church’s effort to rebuild the community “one person at a time.” The Reverend Jim Dickerson and his wife Grace joined forces with Manna Inc. to provide a variety of services to the community, including a path to home ownership. S Street Village is a continuation of that mission. After receiving approval of a map amendment to upzone the site, which we spearheaded, the project preserves the original New Community Church building at the center while creating new 90 new units of housing and the Manna headquarters around a central courtyard.
